Keeping pets comfortable in a desert summer

Hot pavement, dry air and shedding coats. Simple routines that help dogs and cats feel their best from May to September.

Tucson pets are tough, but summer temperatures over 100 degrees are hard on them too. The good news is that a few small habits go a long way.

Walk early, walk late

Pavement can be far hotter than the air. Put the back of your hand on the sidewalk for seven seconds. If it is too hot for you, it is too hot for paws. Plan walks for sunrise and after sunset, and keep them shorter on the hottest days.

Brush out the undercoat

A thick undercoat traps heat. Ten minutes with a dematting comb a few times a week clears loose fur, and grooming gloves make a cool bath feel like a massage.

Keep eyes and ears clean

Dust and dry air can lead to tear stains and itchy ears. Gentle eye wipes and finger ear wipes help after a dusty walk or a trip to the dog park.

Play indoors at midday

Cats and small dogs still need exercise when it is too hot outside. A rechargeable motion toy keeps them busy in the cool of the house during the hottest hours.

Hub tipAlways leave fresh water in a shaded spot, and never leave a pet in a parked car, even for a few minutes.
